Commercial Involute Gears are described by the Diametral pitch based on the PCD (Pitch Circle Diameter) of the gear and the pressure angle.
The diameter being relative to the No of teeth. (EG a gear with 40 teeth and 1" PCD = 40DP) .
Most commercial gears have a 20° pressure
angle (angle through the chord of the involute section of the tooth measured
between the OD and PCD).
