Commercial Involute Gears are described by the Diametral pitch based on the PCD (Pitch Circle Diameter) of the gear and the pressure angle.

The diameter being relative to the No of teeth. (EG a gear with 40 teeth and 1" PCD = 40DP) .

Most commercial gears have a 20° pressure angle (angle through the chord of the involute section of the tooth measured between the OD and PCD).
 
 
 

MODULE AND D.P. EQUIVALENT GUIDE FOR GEARS

Metric gearing is refereed to by the module (Addendum = Distance between the OD and PCD) and the chart below gives an idea of what the most commonly used modules look like in linear representation (rack gearing) compared to the nearest equivalent Diametral pitches.
