THREE CONE CLUTCH DESIGNS

CLUTCH DESIGN NO. 1 -- ‘ALL HOLEY’

 Requires 2 x 20b modified flanged wheels:
        1 off (Left) ,15° flared outwards
        1 off (Right), with 15° reduction taper for engagement

Overall length over bosses: 1"

Clutch assembly shown in the fully engaged position.
 
 
 

CLUTCH DESIGN NO. 2

Uses a single 20b de-formed 15° flared outwards and a machined 15° x Ø 0.750"  machined clutch plate.

Deforming tool sketches are available for D.I.Y.

Overall length in fully engaged position 0.9"
 


 

Note:  The de-formed 20b can also be used very effectively as a steam locomotive chimney upper lip.

Testing proved that the solid clutch plate is more efficient and occupies slightly less linear space.

Note :  A groove may be machined in the boss of the machined part to take a selector strip as in the No 3 design below.

I also made a very small version using two tinplate road wheel bosses as the basic material.
 
 
 

CLUTCH DESIGN NO. 3  -- FULLY MACHINED (2 PARTS)

All machined parts with Meccano threads.

Suggested material and sizes Brass CZ 121 Female (A) Cone Angle 20º  - Female Outside Dia 0.75" - Male 0.625" ? Standard Meccano bosses.

Note: The groove for the selector is Ø 0.250" at the base x 0.062" wide. Can be made to smaller sizes using the same principle.


 
 
 

The selector can be made from any strip (Not supplied) and the slot can be cut on the end hole in either position as drawn.
